미국에서 대중적 인기를 가장 많이 받고 있는 시인. 메인 주의 포틀랜드에서 태어났다. 보든(Bowdoin) 대학을 졸업하고 약 3년 동안 유럽에 유학한 뒤 귀국해서 모교의 근대어학과 교수가 되었다. 몇 년 뒤에는 하버드 대학 교수가 된다. 그 사이에 다시 유럽에 간 적이 있는데, 이때 첫 번째 부인을 잃었다. 그후 스위스에서 프랑세즈 애플튼(Frances Appleton)이라는 여자를 사랑하게 되어 재혼하나 그녀 역시 불행한 사고로 죽는다. "하이피리언(Hyperion)"은 그녀를 여주인공으로 삼아 쓴 소설이다. 18년 동안 하버드 대학 교수로 있으면서 많은 작품을 발표했다. 식민지 전쟁을 배경으로 한 비련의 이야기 시 "에반젤린(Evangeline)", 인디언 영웅의 신화적 이야기 "하이어와터의 노래(The Song of Hiawatha)", 퓨리턴 군인의 연애 이야기 "마일즈 스탠디시의 구혼(The Courtship of Miles Standish)" 등의 작품이 널리 알려져 있다. 많은 사람들이 애송하는 '인생찬가(A Psalm of Life)'는 시집 "밤의 노래(Voices of the Night)"에, '화살과 노래(The Arrow and the Song)'는 "브르주의 종루(The Belfrey of Brouges and Other Poems)"에 실려 있다.
A Psalm of Life
인생찬가
Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
슬픈 어조로 내게 말하지 마라,
"Life is but an empty dream!"
인생은 한낱 허황된 꿈에 지나지 않는다고!
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
잠자는 영혼은 죽음이고
And things are not what they seem.
만물의 본체는 외양대로만은 아니란다.
Life is real! Life is earnest!

And the grave is not its goal;

Lives of great men all remind us

psalm: 찬송가. 찬가. 성스러운 노래. psalmist; 찬양자.
mournful numbers: 구슬픈 어조. numbers는 운율, 박자, 가락을 뜻한다.
that slumbers: that은 여기에서 관계대명사. 선행사는 the soul.
Dust thou art: thou art dust = you are dust. thou art은 you are의 옛 어법.
to dust returnest: return to dust. returnest는 return의 이인칭 동사로 옛 어법.
destined end: 운명적으로 정해진 목적.
But to act: 앞의 not와 상관적으로 쓰인 것. 위 행에 나오는 is의 주어이다. 문장을 정돈해 보면, Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, but to act is our destined end or way가 된다.
each to-morrow: 하루하루의 내일. 그 앞의 that은 목적의 부사절을 가져오는 접속사이다. that 절의 find는 가정법 동사.
Art is long, and Time is fleeting: "Life is short, and art is long"의 변형. 여기에서 "Art is long"을 "예술은 길다"고 이해하면 맥락과 맞지 않다. "Art is long"은 히포크라테스가 원래 뜻했던 대로 "배울 것은 많다"고 이해해야 옳다. 그의 라틴어 원문은 ars est longa, vita brevis.
like muffled drums: 무엇인가로 덮여서 소리가 약해진 북처럼. 심장이 몸 속에서 박동하는 것을 그렇게 비유하였다.
bivouac: 야영장. 비박.
howe'er: however. 박자를 맞추기 위해 한 음절 줄인 것.
Heart: 심장. 용기의 은유이다.
o'erhead: overhead.
that: 목적의 용법을 이끄는 접속사.
o'er: over.
main: 대해. 바다.
forlorn: 비참한. 절망스러운. 외로운.
