19세기 사람이면서도 20세기 정신에 더 강렬하게 호소하고 있는 프랑스 시인. 파리에서 태어나 어렸을 때 아버지를 잃고 고관을 지낸 의붓아버지 밑에서 자랐다. 조숙한 문제아로 고등 학교를 중퇴하고 대학 입학 후에도 장래가 보장되는 자리를 마다하고 문학을 지망한다. 성년이 되어 재산을 상속받았으나 방탕한 생활에 빠져 2년 동안에 유산을 거의 탕진해 버린다. 24세 때 미술평론가로서 데뷔하고, 문예비평·시·단편소설 등을 발표하여 문단에도 등단하며, 1848년 2월 혁명에도 가담하였다. 에드거 앨런 포우(Edgar Allan Poe)에 심취하여 큰 영향을 받았다. 그의 작품을 번역하여 소개하기도 한다. 1857년에 시집 <악의 꽃 Les Fleurs du Mal> 출판. 그러나 미풍양속을 해친다는 이유로 벌금을 물고 시 6편을 삭제하라는 판결을 받는다. 1860년에 <인공낙원(人工樂園)> 출판. 1864년 경부터 건강이 악화되어 1867년 여름에 실어증 상태에서 46세의 나이로 세상을 떠난다. 사후에 간행된 전집에 <악의 꽃>(3판), <소산문시 Petits pomes en prose>, 산문시집 <파리의 우울 Le spleen de Paris> 등이 수록되어 있다. 그의 시는 다음 세대인 베를렌·랭보·말라르메 등 상징파 시인들에게 큰 영향을 끼쳤다.

--Tell me, you enigmatical man, whom do you love the most? Your father or your mother, your sister or your brother?
--말씀해 보시오, 수수께끼 같은 양반, 당신은 누구를 가장 사랑하시오?
당신의 아버지나 어머니, 누이나 형제인가요?
--I have neither father, mother, sister, nor brother.
--내겐 아버지도, 어머니도, 누이도, 형제도 없답니다.
--Your friends, then?
--그럼, 친구들인가요?
--You're using a word which has thus far remained beyond the range of my vocabulary.

--Your country?

--I haven't the remotest notion of the latitude in which it is situated.

Get Drunk! (from 'Le spleen de Paris')
취하라! ('파리의 우울‘중에서)
One should always be drunk. That's all that matters;
항상 취하라. 무엇보다 중요한 것은 그것이다.
that's our one imperative need. So as not to feel Time's horrible burden
one which breaks your shoulders and bows you down, you must get drunk without cease.
그렇게 하는 것만이 그대의 어깨를 짓누르고 그대의 허리를 휘게 하는 무서운 시간의 중압을 느끼지 않을 수 있는 유일한 길이다. 끊임없이 취하라.
But with what? With wine, poetry, or virtue as you choose. But get drunk.
그러나 무엇에? 술이건, 시이건, 선이건, 그대가 좋아하는 것에. 다만 취하라.
And if, at some time, on steps of a palace, in the green grass of a ditch, in the bleak solitude of your room, you are waking and the drunkenness has already abated, ask the wind, the wave, the stars, the birds, the clock, all that which flees, all that which groans, all that which rolls, all that which sings, all that which speaks, ask them, what time it is;
그러다 때로 궁전의 계단이나 개울가 푸른 잔디 위에서, 또는 삭막하고 고독한 그대의 방에서 깨어나 문득 취기가 어느 사이 사라졌음을 발견하게 되면 물으라, 바람에게, 파도에게, 별에게, 새에게, 시계에게, 달아나는 모든 것, 신음하는 모든 것, 구르는 모든 것, 노래하는 모든 것, 말하는 모든 것에 물으라. 지금 몇 시냐고.
and the wind, the wave, the stars, the birds, and the clock, they will all reply: "It is time to get drunk! So that you may not be the martyred slaves of Time, get drunk, get drunk, and never pause for rest! With wine, poetry, or virtue, as you choose!"

one imperative need: 반드시 필요한 한 가지 일.
So as not to--: ---하지 않기 위해서.
one which: a burden which. one은 Time's horrible burden의 성격을 which 이하로 설명하기 위해 다시 대명사로 받은 것. Time을 대문자로 쓴 것은 시간의 절대적 힘을 나타내기 위한 것이다.
without cease: 끊임없이.
as you choose: 당신이 좋을 대로.
abated: 감소되다. 약화되다. 가시다.
So that you may not: --이 아니기 위해서.
the martyred slaves of Time: 시간에 의해 학대 받는 노예.
never pause for rest: 쉬기 위해 멈추지 말라.
