Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

 

청춘은 인생의 한 시기가 아니라 마음의 상태이다. 그것은 장미빛 뺨도, 빨간 입술도 아니며 나긋나긋한 무릎도 아니다. 그것은 의지와 상상력이며 활력이 넘치는 감성이다. 그것은 삶의 깊은 샘에서 솟아나는 신선함이다.

 

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

 

청춘은 용기가 비겁함을 누르는 것을 뜻하며, 안이함을 떨쳐 버리고 모험에 나서는 것을 뜻한다. 이것은 때로 20세의 청년에게서가 아니라 60세의 노인에게서 발견되기도 한다. 누구도 햇수로 늙는 것은 아니다. 이상을 버릴 때 우리는 늙는 것이다.

 

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

 

나이는 피부에 주름을 만들지만 열정을 포기하는 것은 정신에 주름살을 만든다. 걱정과 두려움과 자기불신은 심장을 굴복시키고 정신을 재로 만들어 버린다.

 

Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next, and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long are you young.

 

60살이든 16살이든, 사람의 마음속에는 경이로움에의 끌림, 미지의 것에 대한 꺾이지 않는 어린애 같은 호기심, 그리고 삶이라는 게임의 즐거움이 들어있게 마련이다. 그대와 나의 심장 한 가운데는 무선 전신국이 있다. 그것이 인간과 절대자로부터 오는 아름다움, 희망, 환호, 용기, 그리고 힘의 메시지를 수신하는 한, 그대는 젊다.

 

When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at twenty, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.

 

안테나가 내려지고 그대 정신이 냉소의 눈덩이와 비관의 얼음으로 덮일 때, 그대 비록 스무 살의 나이라 할지라도 이미 늙은 것이며, 안테나가 올려지고 낙관의 전파를 수신한다면, 그대 여든의 나이라도 젊은 상태로 죽을 수 있는 희망이 있다.
